Kapadokya is a vast region located in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey, encompassing the present-day cities of Aksaray, Niğde, Nevşehir, and Kayseri. It was formed around 60 million years ago through the erosion of soft layers of volcanic ash and lava ejected by Mount Erciyes, Mount Hasan, and Mount Göllüdağ, shaped over millions of years by rain and wind. Human settlement in the region dates back to the Paleolithic era, and it has been home to various civilizations throughout history. Initially inhabited by the Hittites, the area later became one of the significant centers of Christianity.
The unique landscapes of Cappadocia are characterized by extraordinary valley formations and fairy chimneys. These geological features, shaped by erosion and volcanic activity over thousands of years, make Cappadocia a natural wonder recognized worldwide. Fairy chimneys are cone-shaped rock formations formed by the erosion of soft tuff rocks due to wind and rain. The valleys, on the other hand, are deep and unique geographical formations resulting from the effects of this erosion over time. The valleys and fairy chimneys of Cappadocia offer a breathtaking and enchanting landscape to those exploring the region.
Today, Cappadocia holds great importance for tourism. Key attractions include Ortahisar Castle, Pigeon Valley, Uçhisar Castle, Göreme, Love Valley, Çavuşin, Avanos, Zelve Valley, Paşabağları, Ihlara Valley, Selime Village, Dervent Valley, Derinkuyu, and Kaymaklı, among approximately 200 underground cities and numerous historical churches. The region is home to Göreme National Park, Karain Pigeon Houses, Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı Underground Cities, Karlık Church, Yeşilöz Theodoro Church, and Soğanlı Archaeological Site, all of which were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
