Sema Performance: Journey to the Depths of the Soul! The Sema performance is a ritual dance of dervishes who embrace the philosophy of Mevlevism, and it is performed by the semazen dervishes. Mevlevism belongs to the Mevlevi Order, a sect of Islamic Sufism, and its founder is the renowned poet and mystic, Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi.
The Sema performance is a ritual where semazen dervishes slowly turn, accompanied by music, in a meditation and prayer ceremony. The performance, featuring the turns of the semazen, their bows, the opening of their arms, and the emphasis on their swirling skirts, offers profound meaning to the audience.
At the core of this performance is the symbolism of the semazen turning, representing the concept of "vahdet-i vücut" (unity of existence). "Vahdet-i vücut" signifies the "oneness of being" and represents the merging with God in Mevlevism. The turning of the semazen symbolizes the unity with existence and also represents the rotation of the universe, its cyclical nature, and the concept of unity.
Sema Performances (Mevlevi ceremonies) are conducted by 1 semazenbaşı (head semazen), 5 semazen (whirling dervishes), and 4 musicians. The Sema performance lasts for 50 minutes, and at the end of the show, a 10-minute slideshow about the formation of Fairy Chimneys and Cappadocia is presented. Booklets in various languages are provided to enhance the understanding of the performances.
After the performance, guests are served sherbet. Wouldn't you want to experience this feeling too?
The price of the Cappadocia Sema Performance Tour includes the transfers of our guests.
